Dit apparaat wordt gebruikt om het lineaire elektro-optische effect (Pockels-effect) aan te tonen: de dubbele breking van een kristal verandert als reactie op een elektrisch veld. Bij lithiumniobaat is dit effect evenredig met de aangelegde spanning. De optische as van het kristal is evenwijdig aan het elektrische veld van een plaatcondensator en loodrecht op de hoofdas van het geometrische lichtpad (transversale configuratie). De experimenten worden uitgevoerd met behulp van een lineair gepolariseerde laser.
